amethyst-with-rutile-and-hematite-sterling-silver-wide-band-ring
Amethyst with Rutile and Hematite Sterling Silver Wide Band Ring

Amethyst with Rutile & Hematite Wide Band Ring – Size 8

This stone is like a tiny, slightly mysterious gazing ball. The softly colored amethyst has a beautiful rounded dome that gives you a view deep into the stone, where red hematite flakes and fine rutile needles seem to float at different levels inside the quartz. Turn it in your hand and the whole little world inside shifts. Some of the hematite flashes a vivid red while other inclusions seem to disappear and reappear depending on the angle. I love stones like this because there is always something else to find in them.

The dome is high enough to really emphasize that wonderful three-dimensional effect without making the ring feel impractically tall. Its nearly round shape only adds to the gazing-ball quality, giving the stone a completely different personality from a more traditionally cut amethyst. The pale lavender color also leaves enough transparency for the inclusions to remain the star of the show rather than disappearing into dark purple.

Hematite is an iron oxide that can occur naturally as red inclusions within amethyst and other varieties of quartz. In thin plate-like crystals it can appear surprisingly bright red when light passes through it. Rutile is titanium dioxide and commonly forms fine needle-like crystals within quartz. Here the combination of red flakes, dark delicate needles and lavender quartz creates a miniature landscape suspended inside the stone.

I set it in my double bezel, surrounding the round stone with a darkened, hand-hammered border that gives all that soft lavender and red a little more visual weight. The wide sterling silver band is heavily textured and covered with individually applied silver details, then oxidized before the raised metal is polished back to brightness.

Metaphysically, amethyst is traditionally associated with calm, intuition and clarity. Hematite is associated with grounding and stability, while rutile is often associated with energy and intention.

✧ Gemstone: Natural Amethyst with Rutile and Hematite inclusions
✧ Ring Size: 8; due to the wide band, best suited for approximately a size 7.5–7.75 finger
✧ Band Width: Approximately 18.5 mm at the front, tapering to 9.5 mm at the back
✧ Ring Face: Approximately 22 mm
✧ Setting: Double bezel with hand-hammered border
✧ Metal: Sterling silver with an oxidized patina

One-of-a-kind and made with care in my studio.
