The color alone is remarkable. Rich turquoise, vivid blue-green, and deeper shades of teal flow through this substantial stone, crossed by dark, branching lines and delicate networks of natural fractures. Some areas are almost luminous, while others have a deeper, moodier blue that gives the pattern incredible dimension. At 55 mm long, it's a magnificent specimen, and one that deserves to be seen up close.

I love working with stones that have an interesting geological history, but there's something particularly fascinating about opalized wood. What you're looking at was once part of a living tree. Over an immense stretch of geological time, the original organic material was buried and gradually replaced or impregnated by silica-rich minerals, preserving a record of something that existed long before the stone ever reached my hands. It's an extraordinary transformation, and the thought that something once alive could become a gemstone this beautiful is part of what makes this material so compelling.

This specimen comes from Obi Island, part of Indonesia's North Maluku island group, a volcanic region known for its unusual mineral deposits. Unlike the familiar brown and tan colors of traditional petrified wood, material from Obi can display remarkable shades of blue and green. Its striking coloration and complex internal patterns make it particularly desirable for collectors of unusual lapidary materials. Large, beautifully patterned pieces like this one are especially captivating.

For the setting, I wanted to give this stone the attention it deserved without competing with its incredible color. I've framed it in a double-layered silver bezel with a darkened, textured border, then added a graduated arrangement of polished silver granules following the lower curves of the stone. The granules become larger toward the pointed bottom, creating a beautiful rhythm that complements its elongated shape. The back has its own abstract pattern of intersecting lines worked into the silver, a contrasting detail that makes the reverse interesting in its own right.

This is a substantial, one-of-a-kind piece for someone who loves exceptional gemstones, unusual geological materials, and jewelry with a story behind it. It's the sort of stone I could just as easily imagine keeping in a specimen collection, except I much prefer the idea of being able to wear it.

In traditional crystal lore, petrified wood is associated with grounding, patience, endurance, and a connection to the natural world. Opal is often associated with creativity, inspiration, and imagination.

✧ Stone: Natural opalized petrified wood from Obi Island, Indonesia
✧ Pendant Size: Approximately 55 × 33 mm
✧ Metal: Sterling silver and fine silver
✧ Chain: Sterling silver diamond-link chain
✧ Length: Adjustable from 18 to 20 inches
✧ Design: Double-layered silver bezel with graduated silver granule detailing
✧ Finish: Polished silver with darkened textured details
✧ Back: Textured silver reverse with abstract linear pattern
✧ Closure: Sterling silver lobster claw clasp

One-of-a-kind and made with care in my studio.
