Lapis Lazuli Hand-Knotted Necklace in Sterling Silver

There’s an undeniably sensuous allure to a hand-knotted strand of gemstones. Each bead moves with a liquid grace, the silk thread giving the necklace a supple drape against the skin. In the hand, they’re a joy to roll between your fingers, smooth and rhythmic with just the right weight. It’s a tactile pleasure, flexible and deeply satisfying. I adore layering these strands, playing with different stones, colors, and lengths, but they’re just as beautiful worn alone. Each one is knotted on silk thread chosen to complement the stones.

There’s something especially striking about the deep blue of lapis lazuli, and these faceted cubes show it beautifully. The color is a rich, saturated ultramarine blue, broken here and there by the natural variations and occasional flecks of golden pyrite that are so characteristic of the stone. The cube shape gives the strand a slightly unexpected edge, while the faceting catches the light and keeps all that intense blue from feeling flat. At 24 inches, it has a beautiful long drape and enough color to make an impact without feeling heavy.

Lapis lazuli has been prized for thousands of years, from ancient Egypt to Renaissance Europe, where the stone was ground into pigment to create ultramarine blue. It has long been associated with wisdom, truth, intuition, and self-expression.
