Faceted Blue Sapphire Pendant in Sterling Silver

Not every sapphire is trying to be bright blue. This one goes dark, with dense, inky color that can look nearly black until the light catches the facets and blue begins to emerge from underneath. There are flashes of midnight, navy and violet hidden in there, and the elongated teardrop cut makes the whole thing feel sleek and a little mysterious.

Sapphire is corundum, the same mineral as ruby, and its blue color generally comes from trace amounts of iron and titanium within the crystal. While the brilliantly transparent blues tend to get most of the attention, darker sapphires have their own appeal. The color feels deeper and more intense, and this stone has enough size and faceting to let those shifts reveal themselves as you move. I’d had this sapphire tucked away for years before finally deciding what I wanted to do with it, and I love it surrounded by darkened sterling silver.

Sapphires have carried an impressive amount of mythology with them for centuries. They have been worn as symbols of wisdom, protection, truth and clear thinking, and were once believed to guard their wearer against deception and ill intent. Modern metaphysical traditions still connect sapphire with intuition, mental clarity and discernment. There’s something appealing about a stone with a reputation for helping you see clearly while keeping a few secrets of its own.
