There’s an undeniably sensuous allure to a hand-knotted strand of gemstones. Each bead moves with a liquid grace, the silk thread giving the necklace a supple drape against the skin. In the hand, they’re a joy to roll between your fingers, smooth and rhythmic with just the right weight. It’s a tactile pleasure, flexible and deeply satisfying. I adore layering these strands, playing with different stones, colors, and lengths, but they’re just as beautiful worn alone. Each one is knotted on silk thread chosen to complement the stones.
Dendritic opal is such a cool material, and it’s especially unusual to find it cut into beads like these. The stones move through creamy white, translucent gray and deep charcoal, filled with dark branching, speckled and almost ink-like markings. I love the nearly monochromatic palette of this strand. It has a striking black-and-white quality, but there is so much natural variation within it that every stone brings something different. The faceting catches the light across all of those patterns, making an already unusual material even more interesting.
The distinctive markings in dendritic opal are naturally occurring mineral inclusions that can form branching, fern-like and mossy patterns within the stone. The word dendritic comes from the Greek dendron, meaning tree, a reference to these organic-looking formations. In traditional crystal lore, dendritic opal is associated with growth, connection and personal evolution.
