Fossil Coral Pendant Necklace in Sterling Silver
I love the shape of this pendant. The triangular fossil coral and the flared silverwork above it create a silhouette that reminds me of an ancient amphora or some beautifully shaped vessel. There's a lovely balance between the two, with the open silver framework giving the design a little breathing room while clusters of silver granules fill the space with texture and detail.
The fossil coral itself is a gorgeous golden amber color, with intricate patterns spreading across its surface like a delicate mosaic. Look closely and you'll see dozens of tiny, repeating structures, remnants of the coral's original skeleton preserved in stone. The warm honey and caramel tones give the piece an almost glowing quality, especially where the light catches the polished surface. I've framed the stone with a textured silver border that complements the fine details within the fossil.
Fossil coral is a fascinating material formed when ancient coral skeletons are gradually replaced by silica-rich minerals, often agate or chalcedony, over millions of years. The intricate patterns are the preserved structures of the original coral colonies, and depending on how the stone is cut, they can appear as tiny flowers, radiating fans, or elaborate geometric patterns. This particular piece has an especially interesting arrangement of overlapping, fanlike structures that make it a beautiful little piece of natural history.
