Natural Surface Black Tourmaline Necklace in Sterling Silver

Black tourmaline is usually polished smooth, but I especially love it when the natural surface is left intact like this. Instead of a uniform glossy black, the face is a rugged landscape of crystalline formations, fractures and overlapping planes that catch the light differently as the pendant moves. Some areas flash with a high gloss while others disappear almost completely into the black, giving the stone far more depth and character than a traditionally polished cabochon.

The elongated shield-like shape suits the natural surface beautifully and gives the pendant a slightly dark, ancient feel. I kept the silverwork clean around the stone, finishing the point with a trio of silver granules and adding texture to the back. It hangs from a patterned cable chain with a substantial feel without being either too fine or too heavy.

Black tourmaline is traditionally associated with grounding, protection and stability, and is often considered a stone for creating a sense of strength and security.
