Rainbow Moonstone Hand-Knotted Strand Necklace in Sterling Silver

There’s an undeniably sensuous allure to a hand-knotted strand of gemstones. Each bead moves with a liquid grace, the silk thread giving the necklace a supple drape against the skin. In the hand, they’re a joy to roll between your fingers, smooth and rhythmic with just the right weight. It’s a tactile pleasure, flexible and deeply satisfying. I adore layering these strands, playing with different stones, colors, and lengths, but they’re just as beautiful worn alone. Each one is knotted on silk thread chosen to complement the stones.

These are some really beautiful rainbow moonstones. The stones have excellent translucency, with very little of the cloudiness you sometimes see in this material, so you can actually look into them and appreciate the flashes of blue that appear as the light moves across the facets. Some have broad washes of electric blue, while others reveal little flashes that seem to move around inside the stone. The graduated arrangement gives the strand a lovely shape, and the combination of clear, icy-looking stones and all that blue flash is pretty spectacular.

Despite its name, rainbow moonstone is actually a variety of transparent to translucent labradorite, part of the feldspar mineral family. Its beautiful flashes of color come from light interacting with microscopic structures within the stone, an optical phenomenon known as labradorescence. In traditional crystal lore, moonstone is associated with intuition, new beginnings, emotional balance and transformation.
