Spiderweb Obsidian Wide Band Ring – Size 8

This Spiderweb Obsidian has such an unusual pattern. The elongated teardrop begins in nearly solid glossy black, then suddenly breaks apart into a network of pale blue-gray lines spreading through the lower half of the stone. It really does look like a web suspended beneath the polished surface, or cracks moving through a sheet of dark glass.

Obsidian is volcanic glass, formed when silica-rich lava cools so rapidly that crystals don't have time to develop. I love that something created through such a violent geological process can end up looking this sleek and glassy. In Spiderweb Obsidian, the contrasting patterns running through the dark material give each cut stone its own completely individual character.

I built the ring around the long teardrop shape with a substantial sterling silver setting and wide textured band. A hammered border follows the outline of the stone, while dark patina settles into the recesses of the silver and brings out the details of the band. The band tapers considerably toward the back for a more comfortable fit while keeping the substantial presence of the ring from the front.

Obsidian has a long history of both practical and symbolic use, including tools, blades, mirrors and ornament. Metaphysically, it is associated with protection, grounding and clarity and is believed to help reveal what may otherwise remain hidden.
