Ametrine Barrel-Cut Hand-Knotted Strand Necklace in Sterling Silver

There’s an undeniably sensuous allure to a hand-knotted strand of gemstones. Each bead moves with a liquid grace, the silk thread giving the necklace a supple drape against the skin. In the hand, they’re a joy to roll between your fingers, smooth and rhythmic with just the right weight. It’s a tactile pleasure, flexible and deeply satisfying. I adore layering these strands, playing with different stones, colors, and lengths, but they’re just as beautiful worn alone. Each one is knotted on silk thread chosen to complement the stones.

Ametrine has always been one of my favorite stones. I love the way violet and warm golden tones blend into one another, almost like watercolor where one color washes softly into the next. These are particularly beautiful, high-quality stones with wonderful clarity, so you can really see that mingling of color throughout the strand. The barrel cut is what makes them even better. It’s an elegant, slightly unexpected shape that I don't come across very often in ametrine, with crisp faceting that catches the light beautifully. This is also a quality of ametrine that I don't find very often, and the combination of the stone, color and unusual cut makes this strand pretty special.

Ametrine is a naturally occurring variety of quartz in which amethyst and citrine appear together in the same crystal. The purple comes from amethyst while the golden tones come from citrine, with the two colors developing under different oxidation conditions within the crystal as it forms. Most gem-quality natural ametrine comes from Bolivia. In crystal lore, ametrine brings together the associations of both stones and is connected with balance, clarity, creativity and optimism.
