Aquamarine Hand-Knotted Strand Necklace in Sterling Silver

There’s an undeniably sensuous allure to a hand-knotted strand of gemstones. Each bead moves with a liquid grace, the silk thread giving the necklace a supple drape against the skin. In the hand, they’re a joy to roll between your fingers, smooth and rhythmic with just the right weight. It’s a tactile pleasure, flexible and deeply satisfying. I adore layering these strands, playing with different stones, colors, and lengths, but they’re just as beautiful worn alone. Each one is knotted on silk thread chosen to complement the stones.

The color and translucency of this aquamarine are what make the strand so beautiful. It’s a soft, dusty blue with a slightly milky quality, translucent enough for light to move into the stones without ever looking clear or glassy. It gives them that almost jelly-like depth you sometimes see in really beautiful chalcedony, where the color seems to glow from within rather than simply sit on the surface. The faceting plays beautifully with that softness, catching little flashes of light while the stones themselves remain hazy and luminous. It’s an incredibly pretty aquamarine.

Aquamarine is the blue to blue-green variety of beryl, the same mineral family that includes emerald and morganite. Its name comes from the Latin words for “water” and “sea,” and its connection to the ocean goes back centuries. It was traditionally carried by sailors as a talisman for protection at sea. In crystal lore, aquamarine is associated with courage, clarity, calm and honest communication.
