Chrysocolla in Quartz Wide Band Ring – Size 8.5

There is so much going on inside this Chrysocolla in Quartz. Brilliant turquoise-blue and deep green move through darker mineral material, with areas that seem to disappear beneath the surface and then emerge again as the light changes. Rather than the clean, even color people often associate with traditional gemstones, this stone is full of irregular pockets, veining and shifts in color that give it an almost underwater quality.

Chrysocolla is a copper mineral known for its incredible range of blues and greens, colors produced by the copper within its composition. On its own, chrysocolla can be relatively soft, but it is sometimes found naturally associated with quartz, which can create harder material suitable for cutting and polishing. That combination can preserve the wild blue-green character of chrysocolla while adding the glassier depth and durability of quartz. It's another great example of how different minerals growing together can create something far more interesting than either a perfectly uniform color or pattern.

The stone sits in a substantial sterling silver setting surrounded by a hand-hammered border that creates a dark, irregular frame around all that blue and green. The wide band is built up with layers of individually applied silver details over a heavily textured surface. I use patina to darken the recesses and then polish the raised silver back to brightness, which brings all of those small details forward and gives the band its depth. The band reaches 17 mm at its widest point before tapering considerably to 6.5 mm at the back for a more comfortable fit.

Chrysocolla is traditionally associated with communication, tranquility and wisdom. Metaphysically, it is believed to encourage calm expression and emotional balance, while quartz is associated with clarity and amplification.
