Green Tourmaline Architectural Platform Ring in Sterling Silver & 22k Gold
This ring is one of my platform designs, a completely hand-fabricated construction built piece by piece from sterling silver rather than around a conventional ring setting. The stone sits high above the finger on an open architectural framework of curved silver rails, layered platforms and individually formed details. From the front, the sweeping outer framework creates a strong geometric silhouette around the center; turn it to the side and the layers reveal the complexity of the construction and the hours of metalsmithing hidden beneath it.
At the center is a faceted green tourmaline surrounded by a rich 22k yellow gold bezel. The stone has a beautiful earthy green color that shifts from deeper olive and forest tones to brighter flashes of green as the light catches its facets. Its softly irregular shape works beautifully within the more structured geometry of the ring, while the textured silver immediately surrounding the stone adds another layer of contrast and dimension. The warmth of the high-karat gold brings out the richness of the green against the darkened sterling silver.
Green tourmaline is traditionally associated with growth, vitality and renewal. Closely connected with the heart, it is believed to encourage emotional balance, confidence and a greater sense of connection to the natural world. It is also associated with abundance and creative energy, combining the grounding qualities traditionally attributed to tourmaline with the restorative symbolism of green.
