Laguna Agate can get wildly beautiful, and this one is showing off. Bands of smoky plum, cream, caramel and gold ripple through the lower half before disappearing into a mass of sparkling quartz crystal. It looks almost like two stones collided somewhere along the way, but it’s all one formation, created as silica-rich fluids slowly deposited layer after layer inside ancient volcanic rock. The crystal-filled top is where that orderly banding gives way to something much wilder.
Found in a relatively small area of Chihuahua, Mexico, Laguna Agate has become one of the most coveted varieties of banded agate, particularly when the patterns are tight, complex and beautifully colored. What gets me about stones like this is that nobody designed any of it. Those absurdly precise lines, the shifting colors, the sudden explosion of crystal all happened underground over an enormous stretch of time. Cut one open and this is what was waiting inside. This particular piece has enough going on that you can keep finding new details in it, and its larger scale makes it a necklace that doesn't quietly disappear into whatever you're wearing.
Agate has carried a reputation as a protective stone since antiquity, worn as amulets and talismans by cultures across the ancient world. Metaphysically, Laguna Agate is associated with strength, courage and stability, but also with creativity and transformation. There’s a seductive quality to the idea of carrying around something ancient, hidden and slowly formed beneath the earth, especially when what eventually emerged looks like this.
