Laguna Agate Necklace in Sterling Silver
This is one of those pieces of Laguna agate that has everything I look for in the stone. The pattern is fantastic, with incredibly crisp bands in golden ochre, cream and soft mauve wrapping around that large central orb. At the bottom, the banding gives way to a natural crystalline section, which makes the pattern even more unusual. It's an exceptional piece of Laguna and a really beautiful cut.
I built the entire design around the stone, with a double bezel setting and a semicircle of silver granulation above it. That upper section isn't completely fixed, so there is a bit of movement between it and the stone rather than the whole pendant behaving as one rigid piece. I love what that does to the design. It gives the pendant this unusual architectural quality while all of those irregular silver granules play off the circles and bands in the agate.
And the back may be one of my favorite parts. I patterned the silver with concentric rings that echo the actual pattern on the front of the stone, even placing the large circular pattern behind the prominent orb in the agate. It's a detail you don't see while you're wearing it, but it's part of what makes this such a special one-of-a-kind piece.
Laguna agate is one of the most highly regarded agates, prized for its intricate banding, rich colors and the incredible patterns that can occur within individual stones. Metaphysically, agate is traditionally associated with grounding, stability and balance.
