Laguna Agate Pendant in Sterling Silver
This is a really exceptional piece of Laguna agate. The pattern is incredible, with beautifully defined orbs surrounded by layer after layer of banding in mustard yellow, rust, mauve, cream and soft gray. Several of the orbs have sparkling crystalline centers, and the bands around them seem to spread outward and run into one another across the stone. There is so much going on in this piece, from those tight little formations across the top to the broad sweeping layers underneath them. This is exactly the kind of Laguna agate that made me fall in love with these stones in the first place.
I built the setting around the unusual wide shape of the stone rather than trying to make it behave like a traditional pendant. A curved bar of textured sterling silver runs above it with clusters of silver granulation filling the space between the bar and the stone. The ends are wrapped in silver wire and connect directly to the diamond link chain, so the entire piece sits horizontally across the neckline. The back is open to let you see the stone from both sides and allow light through its more translucent areas.
Laguna agate is prized for its intricate fortification banding, unusual patterns and incredible range of colors. Metaphysically, agate is traditionally associated with grounding, stability and balance, and is believed to encourage a calm, steady energy.
