Multicolored Opal Hand-Knotted Strand Necklace in Sterling Silver

There’s an undeniably sensuous allure to a hand-knotted strand of gemstones. Each bead moves with a liquid grace, the silk thread giving the necklace a supple drape against the skin. In the hand, they’re a joy to roll between your fingers, smooth and rhythmic with just the right weight. It’s a tactile pleasure, flexible and deeply satisfying. I adore layering these strands, playing with different stones, colors, and lengths, but they’re just as beautiful worn alone. Each one is knotted on silk thread chosen to complement the stones.

Multicolored gemstone strands can be tricky. Too many colors competing with one another can easily become overwhelming, but the combination in this strand of opals just works. Vivid turquoise blue, raspberry pink, deep green, lavender, yellow and little touches of creamy white come together in a mix that's playful without feeling juvenile. What I particularly love about these opals is their jelly-like depth of color. They aren't about the rainbow flashes we often associate with opal. Instead, it's that rich, almost translucent-looking color that makes each little stone so appealing. I've knotted them on a soft aqua blue silk that ties the whole palette together.

Opal has been treasured for centuries, with its name traditionally traced to the Sanskrit upala, meaning precious stone. In crystal lore, opal is associated with creativity, inspiration, emotional expression and a sense of possibility.
