Petrified Opalized Wood & Blue Topaz Earrings in Sterling Silver

I love the way the stones play off each other in this pair. The petrified opalized wood from West Java, Indonesia has this incredible abstract pattern in shades of turquoise and deep blue, broken by dark lines and little earthy, coppery inclusions. There is so much depth and variation in the stones, and the almost mosaic-like pattern makes them especially unusual.

Below, I paired them with beautifully clear faceted blue topaz. The clean, watery blue picks up the brighter blues in the petrified wood, but in a completely different way. Where the opalized wood is complex and earthy, the topaz is all light and sparkle. The drops move freely beneath the longer stones, so you get these flashes of bright blue as the earrings swing.

The backs have been patterned to complement the fractured, angular markings in the stones, adding another detail to the design without taking anything away from what is happening on the front.

Petrified wood is traditionally associated with grounding, patience and stability, while blue topaz is associated with clarity, communication and self-expression.
