Petrified Opalized Wood Earrings in Sterling Silver

These earrings are built around an exceptional matched pair of petrified opalized wood from West Java, Indonesia. The stones look almost like abstract landscapes, with vivid turquoise and aqua running through golden ochre, earthy rust and deep glossy black. Fine bands and irregular transitions move through the color, giving each stone its own composition while still clearly belonging to the pair.

The unusual angular shape makes the pattern even more striking. There is something very graphic about them, but the natural variation in the stone keeps them from feeling too polished or precise. Some of the lighter areas have a subtle translucency that gives the color extra depth and a beautiful glow when the light catches them.

I kept the silverwork restrained so the stones could stay front and center, with slim sterling silver bezels following their asymmetric shapes and a small cluster of my silver bubbles at the bottom. A complementary texture has been applied to the silver on the back, giving the reverse its own finished detail without competing with the incredible pattern on the front.

Petrified wood is traditionally associated with grounding, patience and stability.
