Petrified Opalized Wood Earrings in Sterling Silver
These earrings are all about an extraordinary matched pair of petrified opalized wood from West Java, Indonesia. Long and beautifully shaped, the stones have bold natural bands of deep forest green, soft translucent green, near-black and creamy ivory. The pattern is so graphic it almost looks deliberately color blocked, yet every bit of it was created within the stone.
The lighter green areas are especially beautiful. Light passes through the stone just enough to give the color a soft glow and reveal subtle variations within the green, creating a striking contrast against the dense, nearly opaque sections of black and deeper green. The narrow flashes of cream at the top finish the pattern almost like punctuation.
I kept the silver relatively restrained around the stones, allowing their unusual color and strong natural patterning to remain the focus. A trio of polished silver bubbles finishes the bottom of each setting, while a complementary pattern on the reverse echoes the graphic lines of the stones.
Petrified wood is traditionally associated with grounding, patience and stability.
