Plume Agate Pendant in Sterling Silver

This plume agate is just incredibly cool. Feathery plumes drift downward through pale translucent agate, looking almost as though they were caught in motion and frozen inside the stone. Some are fine and delicate while others branch into larger, almost fern-like formations, and the way they descend through the stone gives the whole thing a wonderful sense of movement. Against the soft lavender-gray background, the darker plumes really stand out, making this one of those stones where the natural pattern is the entire reason for the piece.

I built the setting around its unusual curved shape, adding an open arch of sterling silver granulation above the stone. The scattered silver granules echo some of that movement without trying to compete with it, and a hinged bail lets the pendant move naturally on the chain. The back is finished with a richly patterned sterling silver plate, so there’s something beautiful happening on the reverse as well.

Plume agate is traditionally associated with grounding, creativity, and growth. Its branching, organic inclusions have also made it a stone closely connected with nature and the idea of slow, steady transformation.
