Brecciated Polychrome Jasper Wide Band Ring – Size 8
Sometimes I have to stop and think about just how incredible the stones I get to work with really are. This Brecciated Polychrome Jasper feels like a tiny piece of geological history captured in one stone. Soft pinks and earthy greens collide with cream, ochre, rust and deep brown, broken into fragments and seams that record a story millions of years in the making. There will never be another stone with this exact map written across its surface.
Brecciated jasper forms through a particularly fascinating process. Earlier stone is fractured and broken apart by geological forces, then over time those fragments are naturally cemented back together as mineral-rich material moves through the spaces between them. What we see today is the evidence of those separate events preserved together. I love the thought that something so small can hold such an enormous span of time, a little snapshot of the earth's history that you can actually wear on your hand.
I built the ring around that remarkable stone with a substantial, heavily textured sterling silver band. Layers of hammered and applied silver details travel across the surface, while a dark patina settles into the recesses and brings all that texture forward. The band tapers toward the back but remains satisfyingly wide, giving the ring the weight and presence of a true statement piece. Four pairs of silver prongs sweep over the edges of the setting, adding another strong graphic element without obscuring the natural pattern of the jasper.
Jasper has long been associated with grounding, stability and strength. It is believed to encourage a steady connection to the earth and a sense of balance during periods of change.
