Sonoran Sunrise Wide Band Statement Ring – Size 7.5
The color in this Sonoran Sunrise hardly looks real. Saturated turquoise-green spreads around pools of deep brick and oxblood red, with darker areas moving between the two. It reminds me of weathered copper and red desert earth colliding in one stone. The large round cut makes the pattern even more dramatic, giving all that incredible color room to spread across the surface.
What makes Sonoran Sunrise so interesting is that those colors come from different copper minerals occurring together. The brilliant blue-green is associated with chrysocolla, while the rich red comes from cuprite, with dark tenorite also commonly found in the material. Sonoran Sunrise comes from the Milpillas mining district in Sonora, Mexico, an area known for extraordinary copper minerals. Rather than looking at a single uniform mineral, you're seeing different products of copper mineralization meeting in one piece of rock, creating that wild contrast of turquoise, red and near-black.
I kept the setting strong and graphic to let the stone dominate. The cabochon is surrounded by a substantial sterling silver bezel and a second hand-hammered border that catches the light around its edge. Beneath the setting, individually formed silver granules add another small layer of detail before the ring transitions into the heavily textured wide band. Dark patina settles into the recesses, leaving the raised silver brighter and bringing all of that hand-worked surface detail forward. The band tapers from 15 mm to 7.5 mm at the back, balancing its substantial presence with a more comfortable fit.
Sonoran Sunrise is often associated metaphysically with vitality, grounding and transformation. Chrysocolla is traditionally connected with communication and emotional balance, while cuprite is associated with strength, resilience and grounding.
