Obi Island Petrified Wood and Apatite Statement Necklace in Sterling Silver

This is one of those stones that makes you want to look closer. A long, beautifully polished piece of petrified wood from Obi Island, Indonesia, with an extraordinary mix of vivid turquoise blue, sea green, dark mineral veining, and flashes of warm, metallic copper. The colors and patterns are completely natural, created as the original wood was gradually replaced by minerals over an immense stretch of geological time. The native copper inclusions add another fascinating dimension to an already remarkable stone.

I paired it with a brilliant 6mm faceted apatite, whose saturated blue-green color picks up the brightest tones in the petrified wood. Beneath the stones, an open framework of textured sterling silver is filled with clusters of individually arranged silver granules in varying sizes. It's an intricate, slightly wild design, with plenty of detail to discover. The sculpted silver links of the chain echo the curves of the metalwork, bringing the whole piece together.

Petrified wood is a fascinating meeting of the organic and mineral worlds. Although the original wood has long since disappeared, its structure and character can remain preserved in stone, sometimes with astonishing colors depending on the minerals involved. Specimens with this kind of vivid blue-green coloring and native copper inclusions are especially intriguing, and this particular piece has an incredible amount of visual interest.
