Obi Island Opalized Petrified Wood Statement Pendant Necklace in Sterling Silver

The colors in this piece of opalized petrified wood from Obi Island, Indonesia, are extraordinary. Brilliant turquoise and pale aqua flow into deeper ocean blues, with dark, almost inky mineral patterns and little flashes of warm copper scattered throughout. The contrast is especially beautiful, with areas of vivid color emerging from the darker sections of the stone. Its long, tapered shape gives the pendant a striking silhouette and plenty of room to appreciate all those intricate natural details.

I've set the stone in sterling silver with a textured border that follows its unusual shape. A broad, heavily textured silver bail adds another layer of detail, with darkened recesses and polished edges that bring out the contrast in the metalwork. The back is finished with an organic, deeply textured silver pattern.

Opalized petrified wood is an especially fascinating material. It begins as ancient wood that, over an immense period of geological time, is replaced by silica-rich minerals, sometimes including opal. The original organic material disappears, but its structure can remain preserved in stone. The remarkable blue-green colors found in material from Obi Island make it particularly sought after, and the natural variations ensure that no two pieces are ever quite alike.
