Brecciated Polychrome Jasper Statement Pendant Necklace in Sterling Silver

This is an exceptional piece of brecciated polychrome jasper, and exactly the kind of stone I love finding. The colors are gorgeous, with dusty rose, terracotta, soft olive green, cream, and ochre all broken up by a network of dark, irregular lines. The pattern reminds me of an ancient mosaic, with little fragments of color fitted together in a way that seems almost too perfect to be natural. I particularly love this elongated, softly pointed shape. It's one of my favorites to work with, and it suits the pattern in this stone beautifully.

Polychrome jasper, also known as Desert Jasper, comes from Madagascar, where it was brought to the gemstone market in the mid-2000s after being discovered during exploration for Ocean Jasper. Its name literally means many colors, a fitting description for a stone known for its remarkable earthy palette.

What makes this particular variety so fascinating is its brecciated structure. Breccia is a geological term for rock that has fractured into angular pieces and subsequently become cemented together by minerals. Silica-rich fluids can fill the spaces between those fragments, preserving the broken pattern as the material hardens. Iron oxides and other mineral impurities contribute the reds, pinks, yellows, browns, and contrasting tones. The result is a natural patchwork formed through geological processes, with no two pieces ever quite alike.

In traditional crystal lore, polychrome jasper is associated with creativity, vitality, grounding, and a renewed enthusiasm for life.
