Brecciated Polychrome Jasper Statement Pendant Necklace in Sterling Silver
The colors and patterns in brecciated polychrome jasper are extraordinary, and this particular stone is a beauty. Its broad, softly pointed shape is filled with an intricate patchwork of dusty pink, terracotta, olive green, golden ochre, and creamy ivory, all separated by dark, wandering fracture lines. Some areas have larger blocks of color, while others break into tiny fragments, creating a natural mosaic with remarkable depth and detail. It's the kind of stone you can spend quite a bit of time looking at and still discover something new.
I've framed this jasper with a double-layered sterling silver bezel, adding a darkened, textured border that brings out the richness of the colors. Clusters of polished silver granules accent the sides and bottom, giving the pendant a little extra personality. The reverse features a beautifully textured silver pattern, and the pendant is suspended from two points on a fancy oval-link sterling silver chain, adjustable from 18 to 20 inches.
Polychrome jasper, sometimes called Desert Jasper, comes from Madagascar and was introduced to the gemstone market in the mid-2000s. Its name means many colors, and the remarkable variety of earthy tones is one of the things that makes this material so appealing.
The fractured appearance of brecciated jasper has a fascinating geological story. Breccia describes rock that has broken into angular fragments and subsequently been cemented back together by mineral deposits. Over time, silica-rich fluids fill the spaces between those fragments, preserving the broken pieces and the intricate network of lines separating them. Iron oxides and other mineral impurities contribute the warm reds, pinks, yellows, greens, and browns. What looks almost like an elaborate mosaic is entirely natural, created through geological processes over immense stretches of time.
In traditional crystal lore, polychrome jasper is associated with creativity, vitality, grounding, and a renewed enthusiasm for life.
