Brecciated Polychrome Jasper Statement Pendant Necklace in Sterling Silver
The colors in this brecciated polychrome jasper are especially rich, with a beautiful expanse of warm salmon pink and terracotta across the upper half of the stone, edged by a streak of golden yellow. Below, the colors shift into olive green, chocolate brown, creamy ivory, and smoky gray, all divided by an intricate web of dark fracture lines. I love the way the larger areas of color gradually give way to smaller, more intricate fragments near the bottom. It's a gorgeous example of just how varied and interesting this material can be.
The round shape gives this pendant a bold, balanced look, framed by a double-layered silver bezel with a darkened, textured outer border. Three polished silver granules accent the bottom, and the reverse features a beautifully textured pattern of its own. The pendant hangs from a fancy oval-link sterling silver chain, adjustable from 18 to 20 inches.
Polychrome jasper, also known as Desert Jasper, comes from Madagascar, where it was introduced to the gemstone market in the mid-2000s. Its name means many colors, a fitting description for a material that can display such an extraordinary range of earthy hues.
The fascinating broken pattern comes from a geological process called brecciation. Rock fractures into angular pieces, and mineral-rich fluids subsequently fill the spaces between them, cementing the fragments together. As silica and other minerals accumulate, they preserve those irregular shapes and create the contrasting lines that run through the stone. Iron oxides and other mineral impurities contribute the reds, pinks, yellows, browns, and greens. Each polished piece reveals its own little section of that ancient geological history, making every stone entirely different.
In traditional crystal lore, polychrome jasper is associated with creativity, vitality, grounding, and a renewed enthusiasm for life.
